ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Health Informatics Institute (HII) is comprised of approximately over 170 faculty and staff members consisting of biostatisticians and bioinformaticians; epidemiologists, nurse practitioners, diabetes educators and dieticians; software, data, and systems engineers; solution and data architects; laboratory and clinical research administrators; and administrative staff. Established in 2004 as the Pediatric Epidemiology Center, the annual budget of the institute currently exceeds $60 million, primarily in NIH funding. Research faculty areas of expertise include biostatistics applied to pre-clinical, clinical, observational, and population health research; biomedical and clinical informatics; and statistical genetics and genomics. Members are engaged in research focused on the prevention of diabetes and other autoimmune diseases, cancer prevention and control, genetic disorders, and an expanding list of rare diseases. The primary mission of the HII is to establish and maintain expertise in biomedical science, statistics, clinical trial and study design and coordination, software and data engineering, big data and high performance computing, and integrative bioinformatics. This expertise is leveraged to act as an integrative force in bringing together clinical and biological data with results from diverse fields, applications, and enterprises. In doing so, we endeavor to support the investigation of disease etiology, prevention, and treatment in a comprehensive and transdisciplinary fashion.
USF Health Diabetes and Endocrinology is a collaborative clinical program within the HII that includes adult and pediatric endocrinologists, nurse practitioners specializing in diabetes management, and diabetes educators including pump specialists and dieticians. We also offer clinical psychology, social work and a world-renowned research program in order to address the needs of the whole patient and to offer the opportunity to participate in research to every patient seen in clinic. The clinical footprint of the Institute is comprised of the USF Diabetes Center, USF Adult Endocrinology at South Tampa Campus, Brandon HealthPlex, CMS Clinic and Shriners Hospital.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This person provides expert dietetic and nutritional services to patients of the USF Health Diabetes and Endocrinology division. Responsible for case management process and nutritional management. Assists providers and staff with the daily coordination of diabetes patient care to facilitate efficient patient flow and access. Functions as a liaison/fills gaps between patients, staff and providers to ensure delivery of a patient centered model of care. Provides dietary and diabetes education and coordinates the nutritional therapy and diabetes education program with providers and Administrator. Oversees the Diabetes Educator program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides nutrition and diabetes education/equipment training on an individual or group basis. Works with provider leadership in nutrition and diabetes education to establish written protocols to provide efficiencies of patient messaging and tasks and to define patient care procedures related to diabetes education. As needed, maintains training logs of their activity. Maintains inventory of education material. As needed, review patient messages as they arrive, delegated as indicated and followed- up on timely but no later than daily, with all actions documented in the electronic health record. Oversees the Diabetes Educator program, defining resources and expectations.
Works with providers to develop education curriculum and material. Organizes/archives diabetes education materials. Creates/advises effective methods to access diabetes education materials. Assesses quality of care and assists in identifying opportunities to improve patient services/quality. Collaborates with clinical personnel/Administrator in implementing process/ system changes. Act as a liaison between providers, patients, pharmacies, hospitals, other health professionals and nonclinical staff to provide a team approach to patient care (team meetings, daily huddles to review daily schedules and enhance pt care).
Other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, back up coverage of non-provider staff; marketing/community promotion and events.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or related field with at least one year of directly related position-specific experience. Licensed as Licensed Dietician or Licensed Nutritionist according to Florida Statutes 468.501 -468.518 (Part X) and/or Registration with the American Dietetic Association.
PREFERRED:
Previous pediatric nutritionist experience preferred. CDE, Masters Degree.
